Our Progress So Far

Thanks for checking out Project Peru. We have been extremely busy working to get this off the ground. Since the New Year there has been a ton of progress. Here’s what’s happened so far:

In January the class decided, through a lot of research, that we would focus on Peru in our philanthropist work. There is a lot of potential in Peru and we felt that with our design skills we would be able to make a positive impact on the people there.

Once we had Peru in mind, we researched some more! We came across a small responsible tourism company called APUS-Peru. It’s owner, Ariana Svenson, was very enthusiastic about our initiative and saw a lot of potential for our design work to help the people and communities she is familiar with. Ariana is also partnered with RUFADA, an NGO doing work on the ground in Peru, and through them we were able to gather a lot of great information to solidify our goals.

In the early days of February we collaborated with Ariana to decide on the right project to focus on. Initially we chose to design and build composting toilets and solar showers for the students and teachers in a small mountain village called Chaullachocha. After a few weeks of research and talks with Ariana we found that getting information about what was happening on the ground in Chaullachocha was difficult and the priority for the toilets and showers to be designed wasn’t as strong as we had hoped. We really wanted to make a change, and earlier in our research Mike, a student in the class, presented some information on Peruvian textiles and the living conditions of the craftspeople that make them. We saw something worth pursuing there, and decided to foster the relationship between our school’s textiles department and the local Peruvian weavers.

Within this realm, we saw that the weavers did not have an effective, sustainable way to turn a profit from their hard work. We have extensive knowledge in web development and we felt the best way for the global market to be reached through an e-commerce vehicle.

Our goal now is to develop this site and in traveling to Peru, gather intensive research to accurately represent the textiles for marketing purposes.

Along side the goal of creating a website for the sale of Peruvian textiles, we have been developing a strong fundraising campaign. With the compelling story of the Peruvian Weavers we feel we can reach our goal of $35,000.

We have set up a Facebook group and have just launched our website, www.projectperu.ca!
